CHAINED/UNCHAINED

CHAINED

You have now entered the realm of Ammocualli. Dark beasts and unpassable obstacles are plentiful. Any negative emotion you bring here will be amplified a thousandfold, and these feelings will chain you down. That is the fiction behind it.

On a personal level I want to tell you that I made these paintings to help me cope with depression and other dark trains of thought. The seven illustrations below each delve in a different emotion that I've gone through. I am telling you this because I believe openness about  mental issues is the first step in solving them and/or learning to live with them.

FLIGHT OF THE PHOENICIANS

Their breath stopped when the Phoenician explorers saw the seas split. They gazed at the marvel that was Atlantis., and the secrets within these ruins. The drowned city gave access to  it's many mysteries. The horrors of Ammocualli  were lurking in the depths and the wilderness of Cuahuitl was hidden behind a range of maelstroms. The Phoenicians that made it back decided to keep their findings hidden and leave its whereabouts from the history books.

What if there really was a scenario like this? For me it makes it so much easier to connect the fictionalized paintings with the very real emotions that they portray.  'Flight of the Phoenicians' is a single illustration that provides a neutral ground for me between the polar opposites of Ammocualli and Cuahuitl. It also gives these surreal settings a context within human history. I realise this might sound a bit vague to you, but for me it is fundamental to make this concept work in my head.

Out of the pits and into the wild of Cuahuitl is where you are headed now. This world can be harsh but at least there is nothing that holds you down. Letting go of your old habits and trusting in your own judgement is the succesful way to survival here.

For each Chained illustration there is also an Unchained one, which mirrors the negative emotions I tried to capture there. The idea behind this concept is that if I were able to look at the negativity and add an element of 'letting go', I could at least get a visual outlook past my depression. Sometimes it works...
